Bidang perabot mencatatkan 8.5 Billion USD eksport daripada jumlah industri kayu kayan yang sebayak 20 Billion USD. Potensi dalam bidang perabot amat besar terutamanya perabot Malaysia adalah salah satu mutu yang dikagumi di seluruh dunia.

KAMARUZAMAN Dahlan, 54, had been breeding worms on his 0.8 –hectare plot of land in Tanjung Darat, Banting,Selangor for the past six years.He decided to go into worm breeding as he found difficulty sourcing for halal organic compost for his organic vegetable plot.

A former quality control manager with a Japanese firm, Kamaruzaman invested RM100,000 on his farm. When he started, the worms were imported from Australia and Indonesia.

He is able to breed a tonne of worms monthly, which produces 40 tonnes of orgamic fertiliser in pellet, powdered and liquid form daily for the local market.
He also produces organic fish and poultry meal from the castings.

Kamaruzaman, who runs ParkMan Agro, has exported the fertilizers to Japan as well as Korea.

Organic fertilizers, he says, has at least 17 nutrients, compared to only three in urea fertilizers.

Although it may cost slightly more, in the run, it is more economical than urea fertilizer.

Padi farmers in Sungei Sireh (close to Sekincan) have reported higher yields after using the organic fertilizer.

If they were only producing about 7 tonnes per hectare, their yields have risen to 10 tonnes of padi per hectare.

He hopes to set up a fertiliser manufacturing plant in the near future, but this would require an enormous amount of worms.

He is currently not only supplying worms to AZR Agro Centre in Olak Lempit, Banting(which is currently breeding worms on a commercial scale), but also to the Selangor Agriculture Department.

AZR Agro Centre, which has been breeding worms commercially for more than a year, says the worms are bred as livestock as well as for the castings which are made into
organic fertilizers. Plans are also afoot to produce poultry feed.

Company managing director Azlinda Ros Abdul Aziz says that they too had to initially import the worms from Bandung, Indonesia. They had invested RM50,000 on the less than a hectare of land to breed the worms in 30 boxes, stacked like double-decker beds.

Azlinda , who is a USM graduate in Environmental Biology, says studies show that worms are 80% a better source of protein than soya bean.

In developed countries, proteins sourced from worms have been manufactured into protein tablets and in instances , form part of the diet. Powdered worm protein are used in skin care as well as pharmaceutical products.

There are four types of worms locally available: the red worms ,tiger worm, blue worms and the African night crawlers. The centre prefers the red worms because they are easier to breed and multiply fast.

The worms feed on compost, which also forms their bedding.They can be fed on high proteins derived from soya bean residue but these will turn sour if not totally consumed. The worms also require suitable bedding for maximum production.

“The compost which forms their bedding has to be damp and cold”’says the 32 –year-old. The first production only begins after six months.

Currently they sell livestock to local pharmaceutical companies which will extract the protein.

The protein extracts are also provided upon request in powder or liquid form but are processed in Indonesia before they are brought in again to be sold.

“We don’t have the facilities and technology yet to do it locally” says Azlinda.

Although they do have plans to bring in the technology and to set up the factory on four acres of land behind the breeding shed, the main issue has to be settled before moving on to providing such facilities.. “There has to be enough livestock.” She adds.

“ To produce one litre of the protein extract would require at least 10 tonnes of worms,” explains Azlinda. Currently thjs company is producing 50 kg of livestock worms and only one tonne of fertilizers monthly. One company alone is asking for a supply of at least a few hundred kilogrammes of fertilizers.

Their project has caught the attention of Muda Agricultural Development Authority (Mada) and the Perak State government which plans to encourage worm breeding for fertilizer production.

Banks such as Bank Pertanian have allocated loans for agricultural projects. With RM1,000, one can purchase two kilogrammes of worms and they can breed them in any container be it plastic pails, baskets or even lockers.

The company has 40 vendors from Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Malacca, and Johor. They hope to have a branch in each state where they would each have their distribution and collection centre. Once the manufacturing plant is set up, the current shed would be used to store the worms purchased.

The company also naturally breeds 150 kg of eels in the ponds close by, which is similar to its natural home. The eels are sold live to be made into gourmet dishes or sold to breeders. The company also breeds another 50 kg of leeches in man-made ponds Meru ,Klang.

“Eels and leeches are often used in pharmaceutical products,” says Azlinda.

Fruits of success

He was earning up to RM28,000 a month renovating houses in Singapore but he has no regrets trading his hard hat, hammer and nails for the life of a farmer.

KAN Kok Kwai was comfortably stretched out on a chair at the entrance to his 1.6-hectare starfruit farm in Kampung Mantin Dalam on a searing Tuesday afternoon.

Kok Kwai, or Ah Kwai as he is more popularly known, greeted us with a broad smile and a firm handshake. But he was puzzled why we were keen to meet him. After all, he is just a simple farmer.

But this simple farmer has lots of reasons to smile each time he exports his fruit every three months. Each shipment gives him about RM40,000 for each of his four farms.

“This job is better. It is a bit easier to earn money and faster as well” says the 46-year-old farmer.

He is one of six contract farmers commissioned by fruit exporter K-Farm Sdn Bhd, a family-run tropical fruit supplier, to grow carambola, commonly known as starfruit, for the European market.

For the last seven years since his return from Sinagpore. Ah Kwai has been working on his land with a team of Indonesian farm hands.

“It is not difficult work, it is like cultivating your own garden,” he says.

His day starts at about 7.30 or 8 am and goes on until about 5 pm.

From the time the trees start flowering and until the fruits are harvested some 75 days later. Ah Kwai and his workers have to ensure that fungi and diseases are kept at bay by pruning the trees regularly. Pesticides and fungicide are used but sparingly, he says.

“ We cannot simply spray. We know when to apply the fertilizers and chemicals and how to apply them. We have to adhere to GAP (good agriculture practice) standards.

“ Even our workers have to be sufficiently proctected when using these chemicals. It is about safety both for the consumer as well as ourselves. If we do not follow the standards, we risk losing our contract.”

For each season, Ah Kwai is able to harvest some 200,000 fruits from each farm. The fruits are individually sorted by hand and only the best (which are free from fungi, deformities and bruising) are packed into cardboard boxes to be shipped to Europe weekly by K-Farm, the first company in Malaysia to gainEurepGAP certification.

Getting EurepGAP accreditation is not merely a passport to export agriculture produce to the European market, says K-Farm director Kit Chan

“ It is a very comprehensive on –farm quality system.It is about accountability in the supply chain and ensuring the every stakeholder becomes liable and accountable for what they produce and sell. It is not just about how good the produce is.

“ It is about gaining the consumer’s confidence in the safety of your produce because there is a system of traceability. We can detect the problem at source and address it”

Chan said K-Farm provides the knowledge, technology and training to the growers to achieve these goals.

An economist by training, Chan ventured into yhe agriculture business 20 years ago with his Bruneian wife, Cecilia, growing starfruit.

It was a decision that paid off quite handsomely for the couple, whose company is one of the leading exporters of tropical fruits today.

“Being the first company in Malaysia to gain EurepGAP certification four years ago was an honour,” says Chan, who is recognised as an authority on farm management and fruit marketing.

Chan will be one of the speakers at the coming seminar on EureGAP Accreditation and Export of Agro-Produce: Malaysia 2007 organised by the Department of Agriculture and qa plus asia-pacific sdn. bhd.

K-Farm contract farmers adopt the the practices of good agriculture practices through the company’s training programmes which bring to the farmers technology they would not have the opportunity to get otherwise.

“ We provide the expertise. We have officers who go to the farms every week to talk to the farmers, make recommendations and plan their production programmes.”

Agriculture is not just another profession where you grow and sell. It is about producing food for people, to nourish them. We have a moral obligation to provide food which does not harm people,” stresses Chan.

Ah Kwai may not have had the benefit of a tertiary education but he has gathered enough knowledge to know that good agriculture practice is one of the secrets to his success.

APA ITU FIDLOT ?

Fidlot ialah mentemak lembu pedaging secara sendasa berkurung dengan memberi makanan yang bermutu serta air secukupnya untuk membesar dan menggemukkan lembu dalam masa yang singkat.


APAKAH KEPERLUAN ASAS UNTUK MENTERNAK SECARA FIDLOT ?

Mentemak lembu secara fidlot boleh dipertimbangkan sekiranya sudah dikenalpasti dan ditentukan sumber makanan lembu yang bermutu dengan harga yang berpatutan, bekalan lembu pengganti (feeder) yang sesuai dan tempat untuk pasaran. la fidak memerlukan kawasan tanah yang luas.

BAGAIMANA MENTERNAK SECARA FIDLOT

Satu cara ialah untuk anak lembu jantan yang muda beratnya kira-kira 150 -200 kg digemukkan di dalam kandang. Dalam masa tidak lebih 6 bulan, lembu itu akan mencapai berat antara 330 - 350 kg. dan boleh dijual untuk disembelih.

ADA BERAPA SISTEM MENTERNAK LEMBU FIDLOT ?

Ada dua sistem :

  1. Sekali masuk sekali keluar ialah memelihara sekumpulan lembu sahaja sehingga tamat penggemukan. Selepas dijual habis barulah dimasukkan kumpulan baru.
  2. Masuk keluar berterusan pula ialah memelihara beberapa kumpulan lembu secara berperingkat-peringkat berterusan mengikut tempoh tertentu, misalnya tiap-tiap bulan. Jumlah temakan akan tetap apabila semua peringkat kumpulan telah dipenuhi.

Hibiscus or Bunga Raya

Bunga raya bunga kebangsaan Malaysia dan lima kelopaknya mewakili lima prinsip Rukun Negara. Pada 28 Julai 1960, bunga raya diisytiharkan sebagai Bunga Kebangsaan Persekutuan Tanah Melayu . Bunga raya merupakan sejenis tumbuhan berbunga yang sering ditanam sebagai pokok hiasan.
Di negara ini, antara agensi yang banyak menjalankan penyelidikan ialah Agensi Nuklear Malaysia. Nuklear Malaysia sejak 1990 lagi menjalankan penyelidikan mengenai teknik sinar gama terhadap pelbagai tanaman dan bunga-bungaan termasuk orkid dan bunga raya
Teknik mutasi aruhan merujuk kepada kaedah mengubah genetic pokok samaada pada bahagian bijibenih atau bahagian lain seperti mata tunas.
Ramlan sudah berjaya menghasilkan beberapa variety baru bunga raya antaranya Hibiscus rosa Sinensis Siti Hasmah Red Shine , Siti Hasmah Pink Beauty pada 2001, Hibiscus rosa Sinensis Nori pada 2005. Perkara ini sering menjadi masalah utama kerana kebanyakan ciri-ciri utama seperti pengeluaran dan kualiti dikawal oleh kod-kod genetik yang banyak dan tertentu yang mana tidak banyak diketahui oleh pembiakbaka.
Tumbuhan-tumbuhan ini juga memerlukan pemantauan yang berterusan sepanjang musim dan di bawah keadaan cuaca yang berbeza. Setelah tumbuhan yang diingini dikenal pasti, struktur genetic tumbuhan itu masih memerlukan pembaikan sewajarnya agar ia boleh bertambah dan berkembang menjadi satu variety baru yang mana proses pembaikbakaan ini memakan masa bertahu-tahun untuk menghasilkan variety yang stabil.
Kedua-dua kumpulan ini bergantung kepada pangkalan data biologi ujian asid deoksiribonukliek (DNA) tumbuhan yang dikenalpasti.
Teknik ubahsuaian genetik ini juga boleh mengubah arkitektur, menguatkan daya ketahanan dan koordinasi masa pembungaan sesuatu tumbuhan.
